Jesus gave sight to the blind, opened the ears of the deaf, made the lame walk, healed the sick and raised the dead. Apparently, that wasn’t enough for the religious authorities:
Some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”
He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here. The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.
Jesus saw the Pharisees for what they were: evil and unfaithful to the God they purportedly served. He performed miracle after miracle right in their midst but still they refused to believe and demanded that he put on another show.
Jesus declined. Instead, he foreshadowed THE sign by using the story of Jonah as a harbinger of his coming death and resurrection. Then he cut them to the very heart by proclaiming that “pagans” like the Ninevites (who repented) and the Queen of the South (who traveled far to listen to God’s wisdom) would rise at the judgment and condemn them and others of “this generation” who reject Jesus.
Let’s look at our 2 BIG Questions:
1. Who exactly is Jesus?
He’s greater than the great prophet Jonah and the great king Solomon. In other words, he’s THE Great Prophet and King.
2. What exactly should we do?
Believe, repent and listen to Jesus.
