Real Zeal

GUWG-CoinsWe continue our 2022 resolution to KNOW JESUS MORE NOW by examining every word spoken by Jesus in the Gospels.

Here’s today’s selection:

When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.

To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!”

His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

(John 2:13-17)

What on earth made Jesus so angry?

Remember our discussion about Jesus’ first words here? To recap, Jesus’ parents lost the twelve-year-old Jesus. After three days of frantic searching, they found him hanging out in these same temple courts. When his mom scolded him for disappearing, Jesus replied: “Why were you searching for me? Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”

Now Jesus returns to find the temple’s purpose being perverted by the pursuit of profit. Jesus is passionate about letting nothing get in the way of prayer and worship and a true relationship with God. He takes quick and graphic action to make sure the people get the message.

What on earth does this have to do with us today?

Let’s answer that question with a question from the Bible:

Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? (1 Corinthians 3:16)

Let that soak in a minute. We’re God’s walking-around temples in the world today. We’re supposed to be a house of passionate prayer and worship.

Ask Jesus to drive out anything that’s getting in the way.
