Heavenly Daddy

GUWG-Pray-Hands-2We continue our journey into every word spoken by Jesus in the Gospels to help us all KNOW JESUS MORE NOW.

We’re sitting at Jesus’ feet listening to the greatest sermon ever preached: the Sermon on the Mount.

In the middle of his talk, Jesus gave us a model prayer that changed the world:

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.

(Matthew 6:9-13)

Yesterday, we took a deeeep dive into the first word “OUR.” Today, we’ll look at the second: “FATHER.”

The word Jesus actually used was “Abba,” an intimate Aramaic word that could be translated “Daddy.”

Jesus’ use of that word blew the minds of the first people to hear it. No one ever dared to address God directly in such an informal manner, let alone call him “Daddy.”

But that’s exactly who he is. Our Heavenly Dad is all-powerful but also relational. He loves it when we come to him for help.

What kind of dad is he? Here’s a mere sampling of the words the Bible uses to describe him:

  • available
  • caring
  • faithful
  • forgiving
  • generous
  • gentle
  • gracious
  • humble
  • kind
  • loving
  • merciful
  • patient
  • trustworthy

What kind of answers to prayer can we expect from our Heavenly Dad? Here’s what Jesus said:

Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone?  Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! (Matthew 7:9-11)

Pray Jesus’ model prayer conscious of the fact that you’re talking directly to our Heavenly Father and that he loves loves LOVES to listen to your requests and give you truly very really extremely incredibly good gifts.
