After Jesus fed a huge crowd with a few loaves of bread and a couple of fish, people started to get a little curious about Him. They wondered what his deal was. They started to ask questions.
Like this one:
What must we do to do the works God requires? (John 6:28)
That’s the sort of question I probably would have asked. How do I get in good with God? What does he want me to do? Where I can get the official to-do list so I can start earning heaven points?
Jesus befuddled them all (and me) with his answer:
The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent. (John 6:29)
That’s it? Believe?
If I’m honest, there’s still a part of me that doesn’t quite trust God 100% to let me into heaven without a whole bunch of gold stars on my résumé. But here’s what the Bible says about our very best acts apart from Him: they’re like “rotten stinking filthy underwear” and/or “dung” (my paraphrases of Isaiah 54:6 and Philippians 3:8).
Jesus doesn’t want us to go it alone. He wants us to trust Him 8,956%. He wants us to BELIEVE in Him with all our ♥.
That’s Job #1.
