In their last conversation together, Jesus asked Peter three times if he loved him. Each time Peter answered “yes” and then Jesus gave him a command. Here they are:
Feed my lambs.
Take care of my sheep.
Feed my sheep.
Get the point? If you love Jesus, you’ll care for his flock.
But how on earth are we supposed to do that? We’re sheep ourselves.
We can’t on our own. God himself will equip us:
May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory for ever and ever. Amen. (Hebrews 13:20-21)
So, what did we learn this week? It’s pretty simple, really …
Be a sheep. Follow Jesus our Great Shepherd. And then ask him to help us shepherd others.
