We’re taking a deeeeep dive into this rather provocative question: Who did Jesus say he is?
We started with these three answers: Son of Man, Son of God and Messiah.
Now we’re in the midst of eight “I am” statements Jesus made that further define who he is. The first five: the Bread of Life, the Light of the World, the Gate, the Good Shepherd and the Resurrection and the Life.
Jesus next “I am” is from his final week on earth. He’s giving final instructions to his disciples:
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
Read that first paragraph again. Let these beautiful words percolate around in your soul: “Do not let your hearts be troubled … My father’s house has many rooms … I am going there to prepare a place for you … I will come back and take you to be with me.”
Now read the last paragraph again. Notice that Jesus doesn’t say that he’s “a way” or “one way.” He is THE way and THE truth and THE life. NO ONE comes to the Father except through Jesus.
