We’re taking a deeeeep dive into the model prayer Jesus gave his followers:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.
Today’s focus: DELIVERANCE.
Read the last words of the prayer again: “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”
Those words echo what Jesus said to his snoozy disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane right before his arrest: “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:41)
Or as Jesus’ brother, James, said:
No temptation has seized you except that which is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. (1 Corinthians 10:13)
So, what’s the escape route? It’s simple but not always easy: WALK WITH GOD. He’ll light the way through this dark world with his Word through the illuminating power of the Holy Spirit. Whenever you’re feeling tempted to stray, pray. There’s absolutely nothing in this world that you and God can’t handle together. He’ll always always always point you in the right direction.
That’s what Jesus did. We should too.
