We know come to my absolute #1 favorite scene in the entire Bible.
The religious people of Jesus’ day tried to follow hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of man-made rituals, rules and regulations. One scholar came to Jesus and asked a great question:
Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?
Jesus’ reply changed the world forever:
“Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” There is no commandment greater than these. All of the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.
Here’s how the scholar responded:
Well said, teacher. You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.
When Jesus saw that the man had answered wisely, he said to him:
You are not far from the kingdom of God.
I love this little closing detail:
And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions.
(Matthew 22:34-38; Mark 12:28-34)
Jesus cuts right to the ♥ of everything.
God’s Kingdom isn’t about rituals, rules and regulations. It’s about relationships.
God wants us to (1) love Him with all we’ve got and (2) love others.
There’s really truly no other way to live.
