If there’s one word that reverberates throughout the Christmas story, it’s this:
Here’s a simple little truth that always blows my mind no matter how often I read it:
God is love. (1 John 4:16)
The very essence of God’s character is love. He loves each and every one of us more than we can possibly imagine.
How does he show that love?
This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. (1 John 4:9)
What should our response be? The Bible answers that question, too:
Dear friends, let us love one another for love comes from God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. (1 John 4:7-8)
What exactly is love? It’s not a feeling. It’s not a sentiment. It wasn’t invented by Hallmark or Hollywood. Here’s God’s definition:
Love is patient,
love is kind.
It does not envy,
it does not boast,
it is not proud.
It is not rude,
it is not self-seeking,
it is not easily angered,
it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil
but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects,
Love never fails.
(1 Corinthians 13:4-8)
One final question: Can anything ever separate us from God’s love?
Here’s the answer:
Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39)
