KNOW JESUS MORE NOW
We’re examining every single syllable uttered by Jesus in the Gospels. Today’s topic: The Temptation of Jesus, Part 2.
To recap what we started yesterday, Jesus fasted in the desert for 40 days and then went 1-on-1 with Satan. Rounds 1 and 2 went to Jesus. Now it’s on to Round 3 …
Here’s the conclusion to this titanic struggle:
The devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” (Matthew 4:8-9)
Away from me, Satan! For it is written: “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.” (Matthew 4:10)
Satan’s response? He boogied. (Matthew 4:11)
The world is full of splendiforous things that tempt us to take a step off God’s path. Just watch TV for five minutes. We’re constantly bombarded with messages promoting a 100% self-centered and 0% God-centered approach to life. Pleasure. Riches. Beauty. Stuff. God is rarely mentioned and when he is, it’s usually as a profanity.
Don’t buy what Satan’s selling. Anything that leads you away from God is a step in the wrong direction.
Here’s one last anti-temptation verse:
No temptation has seized you except that which is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. (1 Corinthians 10:13)
So, what’s the escape route? It’s simple but not always easy: WALK WITH GOD. He’ll light the way through this dark world with his Word through the ever-illuminating power of the Holy Spirit. Whenever you’re feeling tempted to stray, pray. There’s absolutely nothing in this world that you and God can’t handle together. He’ll always always always point you in the right direction.
That’s what Jesus did. We should too.
NOT THE WORLD
