Jesus On Jesus

GUWG-LightningWe continue our journey into every word spoken by Jesus in the Gospels to help us all KNOW JESUS MORE NOW.

Today, we begin a deeeeep dive into a really BIG question: Who did Jesus say he is?

Let’s kick things off with another question: What title did Jesus use most often to refer to himself?

The answer? Son of Man. In fact, that phrase appears a whopping 82 times in the Gospels.

That title emphasized both Jesus’ humble humanity and his fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. God’s people had been waiting centuries for these words from Daniel to come to fruition:

In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

(Daniel 7:13-14)

Jesus proclaimed himself as the fulfillment of that prophecy in this rather panoramic collection of verses:

No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven — the Son of Man. (John 3:13)

Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him. (John 3:14)

Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head. (Matthew 8:20; Luke 9:58)

I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins. (Matthew 9:6; Mark 2:10; Luke 5:24)

The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds. (Matthew 11:19; Luke 7:34)

He has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man. (John 5:27)

Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval. (John 6:27)

Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. (John 6:53)

When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. (John 8:28)

Do you believe in the Son of Man? (John 9:35)

The Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath. (Matthew 12:8; Mark 2:28; Luke 6:5)

Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. (Luke 6:22)

If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels. (Mark 8:38; Luke 9:26)

As Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (Matthew 12:40; Luke 11:30)

Whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God. (Luke 12:8)

The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. (Matthew 13:41)

The Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done. Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom. (Matthew 16:27-28)

At the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. (Matthew 19:28)

We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life! (Matthew 20:18-19; Mark 10:33-34; Luke 18:31-33)

The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Matthew 20:28; Mark 10:45)

For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. (Matthew 24:27; Luke 17:24)

Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. (Matthew 24:30; Mark 13:26)

As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. (Matthew 24:37-39; Luke 17:26-30)

So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. (Matthew 24:44; Luke 12:40)

When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth? (Luke 18:8)

The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. (Luke 19:10)

When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. (Matthew 25:31-32; see also Mark 13:26-27 and Luke 21:27)

Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man. (Luke 21:36)

The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. (John 12:23-24)

The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born. (Matthew 26:24; Mark 14:21; Luke 22:22)

Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. (Matthew 26:45; Mark 14:41)

Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss? (Luke 22:48)

From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven. (Matthew 26:64; Mark 14:62; Luke 22:69)
