Who is Jesus’ real family? Here’s how Jesus answered that question:
While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him, but they could not get near to him because of the crowd. Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”
He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
(Matthew 12:46-50, Mark 3:31-35, Luke 8:19-21)
Want to be in Jesus’ family? DO our Heavenly Father’s will.
What does that mean exactly? As we we discussed here, the first step in doing God’s will is believing in Jesus. As Jesus said: “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” (John 6:29) He also said: “My Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life.” (John 6:40)
Jesus also made it clear throughout his ministry that faith that says but doesn’t do isn’t true faith. As his brother James put it: “Faith without deeds is dead.” (James 2:26)
So, what sorts of deeds are we supposed to do? In short, fill up with the Holy Spirit and do this: (1) love God and (2) love others. That’s how Jesus summed up all of the Law and the Prophets. (Matthew 22:37-40)
Join the family. Do the Father’s will. BELIEVE and LOVE.
