Blessed Are The Meek?

GUWG-Sheep-LargeWe continue our journey into every word spoken by Jesus in the Gospels to help us all KNOW JESUS MORE NOW.

We’re taking a deep dive into the Beatitudes. Here’s today’s selection:

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. (Matthew 5:5)

The world says: Only the strong survive. The proud rule. Nice guys finish last.

Jesus says: Blessed are the meek.

Why on earth would Jesus say that?

The Greek word for “meek” – praus – can also be translated gentle, humble, considerate or courteous.

Jesus described himself as “gentle and humble in heart.” (Matthew 11:29) Paul referred to Jesus’ “meekness and gentleness” (2 Corinthians 10:1) and instructed us to let our “gentleness be evident to all.” (Philippians 4:5)

It’s no accident that this Beatitude comes after the first two. If we see ourselves as poor in spirit and mourn over our sin, we can begin to to be meek and gentle with others who are sinners just like us.

So, what happens to these meek people? They will inherit the earth. What does that mean? Don’t weaklings usually get sand kicked in their face and trampled? Don’t the strong and the proud always wind up on top?

Not from God’s eternal perspective. Unplug from the world and meditate on this little excerpt from Psalm 37, often called the “Psalm of the Meek”:

Do not fret
because of those who are evil
or be envious
of those who do wrong;
for like the grass
they will soon wither,
like green plants
they will soon die away.

Trust in the LORD and do good;
dwell in the land
and enjoy safe pasture.

Take delight in the LORD,
and he will give you
the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the LORD;
trust in him and he will do this:
He will make your righteous reward
shine like the dawn,
your vindication
like the noonday sun.

Be still before the LORD
and wait patiently for him;
do not fret
when people succeed in their ways,
when they carry out
their wicked schemes.

Refrain from anger
and turn from wrath;
do not fret—
it leads only to evil.
For those who are evil
will be destroyed,
but those who hope in the LORD
will inherit the land.

A little while,
and the wicked will be no more;
though you look for them,
they will not be found.

But the meek will inherit the land
and enjoy peace and prosperity.

(Psalm 37:1-11)
