Blessed Are The Hungry? The Thirsty?

We continue our journey into every word spoken by Jesus in the Gospels to help us all KNOW JESUS MORE NOW.

We’re taking a deep dive into the Beatitudes. Here’s today’s selection.

The world says: Hunger and thirst for the things of this world. Eat lots of Big Macs. Drink lots of Bud Light. There’s no such thing as “right” and “wrong” anyway.

Jesus says:

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. (Matthew 5:6)

Once again, Jesus turns the world on its head.

Our sinful fleshly side has a deep insatiable craving for the temporary things of this world. We want it all and we want it now. But those things can never ever satisfy.

Jesus taught a different way. He wants us to have a white-hot burning hunger and thirst for him and to see things made right through his holy and awesome power. Only when we’re filled to overflowing with him are we truly satisfied.

Jesus put it this way, in rather mind-blowing fashion:

I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. (John 6:51, 53-56)

Do you hunger and thirst for Jesus and his righteousness? Or for something else?
