Yesterday here we discussed how Jesus freaked everyone out by flipping over tables, scattering coins and driving people and animals out of the temple courts with a whip.
Not surprisingly, the religious leaders weren’t too happy with Jesus. That triggered this all-important exchange:
Then the Jews demanded of him, “What miraculous sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?”
Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”
The Jews replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?”
But the temple he had spoken of was his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the Scripture and the words Jesus had spoken.
The religious leaders demanded a miraculous sign for Jesus’ authority to disrupt everything. He gave them and all the world exactly that in a few short years when he died and then rose again on the third day.
The religious leaders completely missed the point. They contorted Jesus’ statement to convict him of blasphemy in a mockery of a travesty of a sham of a trial that led to his crucifixion.
The disciples got it, though. They remembered these words after his resurrection and put their faith and hope and trust in him.
So, let’s look at our 2 BIG Questions:
- Who exactly is Jesus? His resurrection demonstrated his authority over life and death and everything in-between.
- What exactly should we do? Be like the disciples and not the religious leaders: BELIEVE.
