Go Fish

We continue our 40-day journey deeeep into the of Jesus.

Here we discussed Jesus’ first words. Here we talked about Jesus’ first miracle. Here and here we looked at Jesus’ first message.

Today’s topic? Jesus’ first (and last) words to his disciples.

Think evangelism was important to Jesus? Here were his first words to his disciples:

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, and I will send you out to fish for people. (Matthew 4:19)

And here were his last:

“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. (Matthew 28:18-20)

But Jesus didn’t just tell. He showed.

In fact, you can sum up Jesus’ approach to evangelism in three little words: PRAYER, CARE & SHARE. He:

  • prayed for his Father’s help
  • had compassion
  • wasn’t afraid to hang out with outcasts
  • spoke to and from the heart
  • asked questions
  • answered with God’s Word
  • told stories to engage his listeners
  • shared real-life experiences
  • focused on the big picture
  • spoke the truth in love

We should do the same. As Paul put it:

Follow the example of Christ. (1 Corinthians 1:11)

Go fish.
Now.
Please.
