1302 Days Left?

December 21, 2012.

That’s the date the world will end, according to a growing chorus of rather smart-sounding people. There’s a slew of books and web sites on the subject — even a handy countdown timer so you can figure out exactly how many days we have left.

Lots of people have predicted the end of the world going back practically to the beginning of time. Guess what: they were all wrong.

The latest theory revolves around the fact that the Mayan calendar ends on December 21, 2012. (Researchers can’t seem to agree on the exact date — some have it as December 24, 2012, which would make for quite a spectacular Christmas Eve celebration).

Theories for exactly how the world will end range from solar flares to asteroid impact to nuclear holocaust to planetary pandemic to geomagnetic reversal to alien contact.

What should we do? Panic? Drink heavily? Buy lots of sunblock, canned goods and maybe even some guns?

Nope.

First, Jesus made it 100% clear that absolutely no one but God knows the exact date the world will end. (Matthew 24:36, Mark 13:32). So, anyone who makes specific doomsday predictions should be ignored.

But what, if anything, should we do to prepare? Here’s what Peter said:

Since everything will be destroyed in this way,
what kind of people ought you to be?
You ought to
live holy and godly lives
as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.
(2 Peter 3:11-12)

Or, put another way, we should:

wait for the blessed hope — the glorious appearing
of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.
(Titus 2:13)

So, basically, we should wait expectantly in hope and love. The world needs both right now.
