Fool-o-Rama

In honor of April Fools’ Day, I did a bit of research on what the Bible says about fools.

I found a total of 183 verses. Given my natural inclination toward extreme foolishness on occasion, I read ’em all. (Click here and type in “fool” if you’d like to do the same.)

Here are my favorites:

Be Careful

Be very careful, then, how you live —
not as unwise, but as wise,
making the most of every opportunity
because the days are evil.
(Ephesians 5:15)

Like Charlie’s brother, way too often I make careless, stupid choices that end in pain and regret. Symbolically speaking, I’ll dangle my fingers in places I know I shouldn’t, only to have the mouth of evil clamp down and then laugh in my face. (My apologies to Chompin’ Charlie — he’s actually kind of cute.)

The verse immediately preceding the one quoted above tells us how we can avoid wandering into the mouth of evil. It says:

Wake up, O sleeper,
rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.
(Ephesians 5:14)

That’s exactly my problem. I let the world lull me to sleep and then I stumble around in a zombie-like daze making dumb decisions and doing dumb things.

So, what should we do? To avoid getting chomped, it’s time to . . .

WAKE UP

Proverb of the Week

Here’s this week’s Proverb. Read it. Meditate on it. Live it.

For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. (Proverbs 2:6)

Want wisdom? Unplug from the world and dig deeeeeep into your Bible today.  Every single word is God-breathed. Ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate it as you go.

GOD GIVES WISDOM

Fear God

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.  Proverbs 9:10

Want to get smart?  Here’s how to start:

FEAR GOD

Put another way, if you don’t fear God, you’re dumb.  It’s that simple.

Here’s a quick test to see if you truly fear God:  Take a look at the past 24 hours.  Do your actions show that you fear God?  Or do they show that you fear other people and their opinions of you more?  Or maybe losing your job?  Or losing your stuff?  Or pain?  Or maybe a terrorist attack?  Or getting hit by a bus?  Or maybe an invasion of brain-sucking aliens?

The world wants us to fear everything but God.  Don’t.  Turn off the TV, pick up a Bible and read about our all-knowing, all-powerful, all-everything God.  Respect him.  Honor him.  Worship him.  Fear him.
