Jesus is in the midst of a travesty of a mockery of a sham of a trial.

First, he was brought before Annas, an influential religious leader and the former high priest. Then, in the middle of the night he was dragged to Caiphas, Annas’ son-in-law and the current high priest. Throughout the ordeal, Jesus was falsely accused, mocked, spat upon and beaten.

Then the next morning he was taken to the Sanhedrin, the official religious ruling council. They then carted him off to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, demanding that he be executed.

When Pilate heard that Jesus from Galilee, he sent him off to Herod — the man who had ordered John the Baptist’s execution — because Galilee was under Herod’s jurisdiction.
