After Jesus sent the crowd away, he got into the boat with his disciples and went to an area called Magadan.

As others had done before, some Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven. Here’s how Jesus responded:

“Good Answer!”

Jesus was staying in a house near the cities of Tyre and Sidon. A Gentile woman came to him, pleading, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! For my daughter is possessed by a demon that torments her severely.”

Jesus said nothing at first. His disciples came and urged him, “Tell her to go away — she’s bothering us with all her begging.”

Jesus then gave a rather provocative response:

Job One

After Jesus fed a huge crowd with a few loaves of bread and a couple of fish, people started to get more than a little curious about Him.

When he slipped away from the crowd, people began searching all over for him. When they finally found him on the other side of the lake, here’s what he said:

Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval. (John 6:26-27)

That prompted a question:

Jesus Walks on Water

Yesterday, we discussed how Jesus fed a hungry crowd of more than 5,000 with five loaves of bread and two fish.

Jesus dismissed the crowd and told the disciples to get into the boat and go ahead of him to Capernaum on the other side of the lake. Then Jesus went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.

Here’s what happened next:

Jesus Calms the Storm

Today, we come to one of the my absolute all-time favorite Bible stories:

One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s go to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. As they sailed, Jesus fell asleep on a cushion in the stern of the boat.

A furious squall came down on the lake and waves broke over the boat so that it was nearly swamped, and they were in great danger.

The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!”

He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the raging waters, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the storm subsided, and all was calm.

He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

(Luke 8:22-25; Matthew 8:24-27; Mark 4:35-41)

A Pharisee invited Jesus to dinner. They were joined by an unexpected “guest”:

A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.

Little Children

Here’s today’s selection:

Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

(Matthew 11:25-26)
