Listen

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

The Lord said,
“Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord,
for the Lord is about to pass by.”

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart
and shattered the rocks before the Lord,
but the Lord was not in the wind.

After the wind there was an earthquake,
but the Lord was not in the earthquake.

After the earthquake came a fire,
but the Lord was not in the fire.

And after the fire came a gentle whisper . . .

(1 Kings 19:11-12)

Sometimes we surround ourselves with so much noise that we have trouble hearing God’s gentle whispers. Don’t let that happen to you today.

Shut off the TV. Turn down the iPod. Unplug the computer.

Get alone. Take a deep breath.

Tune out the world.

Tune in to God.

Listen.

Be a Sheep

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Unplug. Unwind. Un-whatever-it-is-you’re-doing.

Spend the next few moments with our Great Shepherd pondering what is perhaps the world’s most beloved psalm. Let each word seep deep into your soul, fill your mind and quiet your heart.

The Lord is my shepherd,
I shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

(Psalm 23)

Be Still

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Be still and know that I am God.
(Psalm 46:10)

Turn off the TV. Put away the iPod. Shut down the BlackBerry. Unplug the computer (not ’til after you read this, of course).

Spend some quiet time right now alone with God. It’ll make your day.

BE STILL WITH GOD
