Gardening With God

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

It’s SPIRIT WEEK here on GUWG. Each day, we’ll be looking at one of the most misunderstood (at least by me) topics in the Bible: the HOLY SPIRIT.

Here are today’s verses, straight from the mouth of Jesus . . .

I am the true vine,
and my Father is the gardener.
He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit,
while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes
so that it will be even more fruitful.

Remain in me,
and I will remain in you.
No branch can bear fruit by itself;
it must remain in the vine.
Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

I am the vine;
you are the branches.
If a man remains in me and I in him,
he will bear much fruit;
apart from me you can do nothing.
(John 15:1-2, 4-5)

I love it when the Bible paints pictures.

The Father is the gardener. Jesus is the vine. We’re the branches. The Holy Spirit is the life-giving sap that runs from the vine to the branches. If the branches stay connected to the vine, they live and grow fruit. If they don’t, they die. It’s that simple.

So, what “fruit” does the Holy Spirit help us grow? A cornucopia of fabulous stuff:

  • love
  • joy
  • peace
  • patience
  • kindness
  • goodness
  • faithfulness
  • gentleness
  • self-control

We’ll talk about each of these in detail in the next few days. Until then:

REMAIN IN THE VINE

Christmas Day Prayers

Friday, December 25th, 2009

We conclude COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS here on GUWG with a selection of Christmas Day prayers to help us all keep the focus where it belongs today:

JESUS

Christmas Morning Prayer

Eternal God,

This joyful day is radiant with the brilliance of your one true light.
May that light illuminate our hearts and shine in our words and deeds.

May the hope, the peace, the joy, and the love
represented by the birth in Bethlehem fill our lives
and become part of all that we say and do.
May we share the divine life of your son Jesus Christ,
even as he humbled himself to share our humanity.
Let us be thankful for the true gift of Christmas:
your Son.

Children’s Prayer

Happy Birthday, Jesus!

We are happy because today is your special day,
you were born today, just for us.
We thank you that you came from heaven to earth just for us.
Thank you for all you did for us when you were here with us.

You taught us how to love each other.
Help us to remember to be more loving.
You taught us how to do the right thing.
Remind us that you are with us, even when we think no one is looking.

We thank you that you didn’t just stay a baby in a cradle
but you grew up to be our savior and died on the cross for our sins.
We thank you that you didn’t stay dead but you came alive
and went to heaven, opening a way so we can go there too, someday.

Thank you for all our food and family and friends.
Thank you for everyone who helped make this a great day!

Family Gathering Prayer

Father God,
When your precious Son came to earth
as a tiny baby born in a stable in Bethlehem
in poverty and simplicity,
you changed our world.

As we imagine those surroundings,
we join with the shepherds and the wise men
in wonder and praise.

We thank you for our material lives,
praise you for our spiritual lives
and trust in you for our eternal life.

Prayer Before Opening Gifts

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for giving us the best Christmas gift ever
when you sent us your Son.
Help us to accept that awesome gift with joyful hearts.

Jesus,
Help us to know you more and more
each and every day and to share your light
with those who are lost in darkness.

Holy Spirit,
Fill us to overflowing with
love and  joy and peace
so that we can be more like Jesus.
Help us to spread the good news of your great gift
throughout the world.

Christmas Dinner Prayer

God of all gifts,
We thank you for the many ways
you have blessed us this day.
We are grateful for each of those
who are gathered around this table.
We ask you to bless us and our food
and to bless those we love
who are not with us today.

In our gratitude and love,
we remember the humble birth of your Son
and pray for those who are without enough to eat
and for those who have no place to live.

We remember the challenging message
of caring and giving preached by your Son,
and we pray for love and peace in families
and nations throughout the world.

We give you thanks for the gift of your Son,
who was born on the first Christmas Day,
and for your Spirit who brings our hearts to life
this Christmas Day and forever.

Christmas Evening Prayer

Loving God,
Help us remember the birth of Jesus,
that we may share in the song of the angels,
the gladness of the shepherds,
and worship of the wise men.

Close the door of hate
and open the door of love all over the world.
Let kindness come with every gift
and good desires with every greeting.
Deliver us from evil by the blessing which Christ brings,
and teach us to be merry with clear hearts.

May Christmas evening bring us to our beds with grateful thoughts,
forgiving and forgiven, for Jesus’ sake.

(Robert Louis Stevenson)

MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERYONE!

Pray Like Jesus

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

First, let’s start with how NOT to pray . . .

Don’t do it for show. “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men.”  Matthew 6:5

Don’t babble. “And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like the pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.”  Matthew 6:7

So, how SHOULD we pray?  Here’s what Jesus said:

“This, then, is how you should pray:
‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.’”
Matthew 6:9-13

Most of us have said that prayer dozens of times in our lives.  But it’s not something we’re supposed to recite mindlessly.  Jesus wants us to pray it from our hearts.  Take the time to think deeply about each and every word and what it means.

Jesus modeled/taught lots of other things about prayer.  Here are just a few:

  • Pray often.  “Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.”  Luke 5:16
  • Ask, seek, knock.  “Ask and it will be give to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”  Luke 11:9
  • Watch and pray.  “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.  The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”  Mark 14:38
  • God’s will, not ours.  “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”  Luke 22:42

As incredible as it may sound, Jesus prayed specifically for you and me.  Shortly before his death, he prayed for his disciples and then said . . .

My prayer is not for them alone.  I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.  May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.  I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one:  I in them and you in me.  May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.  John 17:21-23
